Jaap is a co-founder of De Zaak van Advocaten and a lawyer.
Jaap helps start-ups and investors with funding rounds, exits, and corporate governance issues. He advises at the intersection of public-private partnerships to make the Netherlands a leader in companies emerging from scientific research that strive for social impact. He has extensive experience with deep tech and biotech investments.
Jaap is an expert in investment legislation based on European FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) legislation and advises various public and private parties on the (local) legislation that accompanies it. In the Netherlands, this is the so-called Vifo Act (Act on the Safety Test for Investments, Mergers, and Acquisitions) and the assessment procedures at the BTI (Bureau for Testing & Investments).
Jaap regularly publishes about new developments in this area, including in NRC and EW.
Jaap studied law and history at the Vrije Universiteit and the University of Amsterdam and holds an LL.M. (cum laude) from the University of Glasgow.
Jaap has registered the following main (and sub) areas of law in the register of the Dutch Bar Association: Corporate Law (Mergers and Acquisitions). Based on this registration, he is required to earn ten educational points each calendar year according to the standards of the Dutch Bar Association in each registered main area of law.
